STREET OF LIGHTS

Sirens and the heavy presence of police and the fire department in New York City are nothing new. You see and hear them almost everyday in the city. But on my way home from the Upper East Side tonight, I encountered something I've never seen before -- a sea of emergency lights filling up an entire section of midtown. It looked like a scene straight out of Die Hard.

It turns out the NYPD and FDNY were responding to an underground steam pipe explosion that occurred during the evening rush hour near Grand Central Station. Complete coverage on wnbc.com and photos on Flickr.
